While serving as the jury president in the 12th Shanghai International Film Festival, Boyle said that he felt it was "regrettable" that Beijing imposed restrictions on movies. He was referring to the process where Chinese directors have to submit their script for screening and censoring. Anything seen as politically sensitive or sexually overt is snipped off. Danny Boyle is the director of Slumdog Millionaire, which recently won a huge number of oscars.

Boyle in a way chided China for imposing such strict restrictions on the Chinese film industry.
