The classic spelling rule 'i before e, except after c' is not going to be taught to students in UK after a decision taken by the British Govt. It is believed that in today's scenario there are too many exceptions to allow this rule to continue. Many agree and many feel that it is one of the few spelling rules that are universally known so it should remain. However with words like 'sufficient', 'veil' and 'their' existing, it seems the rule should not be allowed any more.

Seems like a sad decision, since it is something that most English speaking people have grown up with.
